The problem with running a service like Ping-O-Matic is that sometimes you have to send emails like this:
To: [...deleted...] Subject: Re: pingomatic > Hi! > > I have tried to ping pingomatic for about 2 days now > but it will not work for me. My site is > http://www.[...xxxxxx...].com/ > > Do you have any idea of why I can not ping your site > anymore? Because we don't want pings from porn sites? > Have a nice day! Thanks, you too! :) -- Dougal Campbell http://dougal.gunters.org/

This post is just begging to be a P-o-M FAQ entry…
That is just too funny. “You gots to love the pr-n people.”
Maybe I’m being dense, but what’s wrong with pings from porn sites?
Oh, you know I love the porn people! Wait, did I just say that out loud? That’s my bad…
Hm, my site is definitely not pron but each time I tried to ping via ping-o-matic, this thing shows up: well… actually nothing showed up.
Maybe you could consider to set up pron-o-matic?
LOL!!
“Pron-O-Matic” - ROFL, that’s hilarious
Awww… but sometimes the pron sites need a little ping too, you know? *giggle*
Thanks, you too!
Shouldn’t that have been, “Thanks, you tool!”
my address is deleted.com… but i do not have games on it yet
Is it supposed to be obvious why this would be a terrible thing to have to deal with? If you don’t like erotic/adult material, that’s fine, and you’re completely within your rights to not offer services to anyone you like, but not everyone who works in the adult entertainment industry is a scammer/spammer/scumbag.
In addition, you should add terms of service information to PoM if you’re going to be picking and choosing who can use the service.
You’re aware that Pingomatic had an outage? This is from the Technorati blog:
http://www.technorati.com/weblog/2006/01/75.html
in particular:
If you use WordPress and have not changed your ping settings your update notifications are currently were not reaching any services, including Technorati and many online aggregators. To add Technorati’s ping server to your list of update services please follow the instructions on our WordPress ping configuration page.
I suppose from a purely philsophical point of view, there’s nothing wrong with porn sites using Ping-O-Matic. In fact, the site in question was even a blog (using WordPress, no less). I personally tend to lump ‘porn’ and ’spam’ into the same general conceptual bin. Considering how much of the spam I receive is porn-related, I don’t think you can fault me too much for that. So, perhaps I should have given more consideration to helping out the person who emailed me.
But that wouldn’t have been as funny, would it?
I think you are right Dougal!
The Ping-o-matic would be overloaded by porn sites ( your filter will not kill that? ),
but then there is a thin line to walk between porn and erotic.
you can do as you wish, it is your service. I would not falt you either way, but could you please edit the “www…deleted…com” to example.com, I own Deleted.com and don’t want people to think I have porn on my site.
As a porn blogger, I would have liked it if at least PoM actually said somewhere on the site that adult blogs weren’t allowed. Now I had to google it to find out - surprisingly, some of us porn folk actually aren’t spammers and do care about not submitting things to services that do not like adult content.

HAHHAAHA
In all frankness, I own some adult sites, and I do not spam, I have very few popups, 1% of my galleries has an exit console, and I am not out to scam anybody. In real life I am a part time consumer advocate, in fact. I am happily unmarried and monogamous,a nd am not hooked on dope. I agree with Thomas, there needs to be an update to the TOS. Excuse me, there needs to be a Terms of Service Policy listed ANYWHERE on that site. Is it just arbitrarily determined who gets pinged, and who doesn’t?

That’s just super. I’ll list my sites elsewhere, thanks. That being said, I really like Wordpress.
well it seems no problem pinging your sites with PoM.
Why you so don’t like porn sites?
Same problem that I have this month after the installation of the Dofollow plugin, lot of spam coming from garbage sites.
LOL - Some people are mad!

[...] It appears that Ping-o-matic, a service that passes on update pings from blogs to several search engines and is used by default in Wordpress installs, may not want to handle traffic from sites with adult content. From Dougal Campbell’s blog: > Do you have any idea of why I can not ping your site anymore? [...]
