I had the same issue when I moved from MySQL 4.0 to 4.1. It demanded that Apache be recompiled, which broke php. Fixing php broke various programs that required special libraries. Software upgrades should be MUCH easier; I don't know why LAMP is still so far away from the easy-upgrade capability of 1980s desktops, when so many companies are supposedly devoting programmers to making things easier.
