I swear wordpress does on the fly changes... I even used a computer I'd never used before and it was still showing the default (no registered gravatar) image instead of my registered one when browsing my site yesterday. Not sure what the problem was since the registered gravatar was showing on other people's sites, just not mine for a couple of days. Guess it was just a hiccup somewhere along the chain.
