An Air Miles Experiment

Several years ago I went on a work-related trip on American Airlines (side note: holy cow! they have RSS feeds!). I don’t travel much, but on a whim, I signed up for their AAdvantage program. I got some quantity of bonus miles for signing up. Enough to keep me interested, but not enough to really do anything with. Then I signed up for some partnership deal that they had with MCI where I earned miles based on my long-distance usage. [...]

Breaking the silence

Between projects at work (rolling out the largest indoor WiFi network in the world at a certain international airport near Atlanta) and projects at home (building more IKEA furniture — bed, dresser, chest, entertainment center, end tables, ottomans; doing what I can to help Suze prepare for Thanksgiving), I haven’t had much time for posting lately. But I’m making a minute to come up for a quick breath and note some of the things that have caught my attention lately:

Yarrr!

Don’t forget: Talk Like a Pirate Day is only about six weeks away. I’m going to get a customized golf shirt made for the occassion. It’s pretty convenient to have in-laws who own an embroidery business.

Blogs of the Day

I meant to mention this previously, but Blogs of the Day is the latest link popularity site. It’s rather nifty in that it ranks sites and articles based on actual readership, and in the fact that it’s an opt-in system. It also only keeps statistics for 24 hours, in keeping with the ephemeral nature of popularity on the internet. Various lists are provided, including Top Posts in the last 24 hours, the BuzzList (most popular in the last hour), Strongest (posts which have remained in the statistics the longest), and Weakest (posts which will fall out of the 24 hour window if not visited soon), among others. [...]

Musical Baton

Thanks to the magic of Technorati and a little bit of ego surfing, I discovered that Mike Papageorge of Fiftyfoureleven passed me a musical baton a couple of days ago, but I missed it until now. I’m not sure how, because I keep up with that site… So, two days late, here are my answers:

Total volume of music files on my computer:
5.6GB. . [...]

Meme Roundup

There have been several new memes lately that I have thoughts on, but I just haven’t had the time to comment on them here. I still don’t have time to discuss them in as much depth as I’d like, but here’s a quick summary:

  • RSS 1.1:

I have mixed feelings on this. It fixes one of my biggest complaints about RSS 1.0, which was the requirement for the rdf:Seq list, which seemed redundant with the content elements. [...]

Petals Around the Rose

I learned about this little puzzle thing called Petals Around the Rose yesterday (via BoingBoing). It’s sort of a dice game where you have to figure out how to solve the puzzle as you go, and once you know how, you can’t tell anybody else. It took me a while to figure it out, because I tried to over-analyze it. In fact, it’s almost an accident that I figured it out at all, considering the line of thought I was trying to follow. Of course, now I’m sworn to secrecy, so I can’t tell you what that line of thought was…

The name of the game is Petals Around the Rose, and that name is significant. [...]
