Hi Linz,

I am sorry that you had some complications, but hang in there...it does get better every week. It seems like we had our surgeries done at the same time since it's been about 3 and a half weeks since my surgery too! I am glad that I am off of the crutches, but still am limping a bit. I still have to do the dressing changes everyday which really sucks. I did have a skin graft from my groin area. And it does seem like it takes forever to heal. I just hope that it will be all healed up before my wedding which is in 6 weeks.

They don't look normal but I am still glad I did this. It's a lot better than thinking about it all the time and being conscious about it all the time! My right foot which I got done first, there is scarring between the toes which I am putting bio-oil on everyday. It's funny that when I had the first surgery, I had a lot of pain and swelling, but with the second surgery, it was just sore. It's kinda interesting how it heals differently.

Well. do keep me posted on how your recovery is going and hopefully we will both be able to wear flip flops this summer!

Hey Coco.

It sounds like your getting on really well. Hows your feet going now?
I had my operation about three and a half weeks ago.
I had a bit of a nightmare with them as the skin graft failed and then I got an infection so they are still pretty swolen and look awful but they arent really painful.
There has been times that I thought that I shouldn't of had to done but I cant wait to have normal feet.
I'm pleased that I had them both done at the same time, I don't think that I would have been brave enough to have the operation twice.
Did you have a skin graft? I did, it was taken from my side and that seems to be taking ages to heal.
But all in all I am so pleased that everything is sorting itself out.
How have you found it?

Hi Linz,

Recently I had my operation as well. However, my surgeon told me that he would not do both feet at the same time. So I had my right foot done on Jan 25th, and my left foot just a week ago. He also told me that I would be back at work in about a week's time, but I needed to take atleast 2 1/2 weeks off of work as there is a lot of walking involved with my work. My second surgery was about 7 weeks apart which I felt was adequate time. I was on crutches for my right foot for about 2 weeks, so we'll see how long it takes with the left foot! And my experience is that the left foot recovery is going a lot better that the right foot, knock on wood!
You're really brave to get both feet done at the same time. Have you had your surgery yet and if so then, how did it go?

Hey everyone. I have my date for my operation to get my toes seperated (next Tuesday) and I'm petrified. Could you let me know what I should expect from the day? I've never had an operation before.
I am also getting both feet done at the same time. How long will it be before I am able to go to work and be able to move (even if its not all that fast)?
The surgeon told me that a week would be fine and I shouldn't have alot of pain, but by reading everyones comments, that doesn't look all that likely.
Any advise would be fantastic.

Hi AMANDA1988, I had surgery over a year ago under local because it was cheaper too, the surgery cost me like 2,500 with local. It sucked cuz i was awake though the whole thing, but since i didn't want to see the doctor put something infront of me to cover so i wont see anything. It wasn't bad the doctor had music on and i was relaxing, if i felt a bit uncomfortable i would tell him it hurt and he would put a bit more anesthesia lol. Well it really wasn't bad if your a brave person and its way cheaper (: Hope my experience helps xoxo, many blessings.

Hi everyone.

I have been given the option to either have a general or local while I get my operation done. I am not sure what to choose! I imagined I would have had it done under a general but now I have been given the option I am not sure what to do. The surgery will hopefully be under just 2 hours. If I have a local it is going to save me $1000 (NZD), so the surgery will only end up costing me around 7k rather than 8k. Not sure if it is worth it or not???

heya, no i only had the one foot done. I got that one done for free on the nhs but as my right foot isnt as bad i'll have to pay for that myself, it's only about 1/3 joint so i think im going to leave that, got too much going on at the mo and can't afford to be on crutches again.

The recovery process is longer than a month i'd say, i would say i was walking normally and being able to do everything as before after about 2 1/2 - 3 months, but i did have the 2 problems i mentioned earlier. My consultant told me it was normally a 6 week recovery. Im still seeing changes in mine now, the scarring is fading alot! It feels so strange walking again afterwards and you'll prob find yourself walking on your heel or side of your foot without thinking about it just to avoid using your toes, i pretty much had to learn to walk normally all over again! Thats mostly all in your mind. I started driving again after about 5/6 weeks i think and it felt so weird at first and didnt hurt hardly as much as i thought it would. You will need someone to look after you for a few weeks after though, being on crutches stops you doing so much and you have to keep your foot elevated as much as possible for the first couple of weeks and only stand and move if necessary, basically you get to spend a fortnight sat on your bum lol. For some reason i got really emotional in the first few days and was wondering why on earth i had the op done! I wouldn't go back and change things now though, i'm so pleased with the result! Don't expect your feet to look perfect straight away either, for some reason i had the image in my head that they would look normal when i had the bandages changed first time, when i first saw them they looked horrible and i started crying on the nurse!! Takes a while for them to look normal again.

How far webbed are your toes? If you feel you need both feet done, go for it, but i can imagine that the recovery and walking again will bit alot more difficult, i don't know of anyone who has had 2 done at the same time. It's all worth it in the end, even after just having the one foot done it has boosted my confidence so much and i dont feel the need to hide my feet any more! Even managed to go on holiday in april and bare my feet to all!! Not one person noticed =) Where as when i went on holiday before the op, i tried to hide my feet all the time and i still had people asking me about it!

Hope i've helped, not trying to put you off with the horrible bit, just don't want you to go what i went through, expecting them to turn out perfect straight away! Wish you the best of luck with the op, im sure you'll love them afterwards and want to show the world!!! I've even started painting my toe nails and wear sandals/flip flops as much as possible :D Love it! I know exactly how you're feeling and can't sympathise with you enough!

Best of luck xxx

Hi Paranoid,

Thanks so much, hearing your story and everyone else's too, especially merlin and hopeandstrength has helped so much, it has worried me a lot but i think i was being a bit unrealistic before, thinking i'd be in and out of hospital and walking in a few days!

I was wondering whether you had both of your feet done at the same time? I don't really like the idea of having just one done, recovering and then going through the same pain on the other foot! So i guess the recovery time was a month approx? Is that right?

God, it makes me feel sick at the thought of carrying on life having to hide my feet. All i want to do is go away with my friends when they suggest it...instead of making excuses again and again. its so frustrating!

Heya, its been so long since i've been on here. Hopeandstrength, Meilin, hope you girls are okay, you're what got me through everything!

j_1312 hey, how are you doing? Have you gone any further with the op? If it is making you feel this bad i would recommend getting the surgery. Its been 10 months today since my op and i couldnt be happier with the results, they have honestly changed the way i live, i dont have to worry about little things like going to the beach, taking my shoes off infront of people etc, this has taken a huge weight off my shoulders. To those who don't have syndactyly (such as the surgeons) there is no possible way for them to realise how we feel about this, i can never find the words to explain and express how i felt about my toes, its hard to put it into the right words. Its much easier for them to say its not a problem, dont worry about it as they dont have to put up with it.

I won't lie, i had a couple of problems with mine after, it took a long while to learn to walk without a limp again, and it got infected and went black which added an extra 4 weeks onto the recovery period but they were both my own fault, the infection was due to going back to work, my job isnt the cleanest thing and there's alot of dust which got into the wound. The walking problem was because i was scared of coming off my crutches and didnt start walking soon enough.

I haven't heard of anyone's toes growing back together after, i think the docs just tell you this so that if it does happen you can't sue them and possibly try to put you off the op as they don't understand it fully for our side! I say go for it if its affecting you this badly, its done so much for me and i am so much more confident in myself now! I felt exactly the way you did before my op!

Hope it all goes well, write back and let me know how it goes, if you want e-mail me at evilpinkbanana@hotmail.com xxx

Hi everyone, thank you so much for enlightening me on your experiences, I have complete simple syndactyly, I have trouble even writing about this as Ive never spoken to anyone about it before, not even my family, I've just pretended there has never been a problem or ever spoken about it. I went for my first hospital appointment today to have x-rays and photos etc. I did this secretly without even telling my family and now i feel so guilty. Its been an emotional day! PLUS i have a huge fear of hospitals which adds to the complicated fear I am gaining!
I don't think I'd realised the recovery would be so long...or that I would have each toe done on seperate occasions, I feel so depressed about it now... :(
The surgeon says she is reluctant to do it as they cause me no physical problems currently and by having the operation it would create them, she said they may re-fuse back together?! Has this happened to anyone? Surely if they heal ok they wouldn't re-grow together would they? She is a hand surgeon and does plastic surgery.

Reading all your stories has been helpful but am so so scared now! Ive never told any of my friends about my toes, Ive just hidden them FOREVER..somehow?! I know I'm going to have to make up some excuse about the surgery, i just cant bare talking or telling anyone about it! Sorry for this extreme rant but I'm so emotional and confused about it right now, all I do know is that I just want to have normal feet...
Anyway, if anyone has any more photos of their surgery before and after that would be great if I could see them?!
Thanks, J xxx

Hi rachel, i've read your post, in january i had my toes seperated, i had incomplete simple syndactyly so quite different to yours. I wouldn't stress to much over the situation, if it bothers you enough to get it done then you should, i know i have always been self concious of my feet and, like you, avoid buying flip flops and anything that shows my toes! as for your husband i'm sure if he loves you a couple of joint toes aren't going to make him put off the wedding!
i understand you being scared about the surgery, i was terrified, i've never been put to sleep or even been in hospital for anything before, it all turned out fine i was in and out of hospital within about 4 hours, i won't lie to you the two weeks after were quite terrible, the first few days were extremely painful and its frustrating because its so difficult to sleep. Although having said that i am so pleased with the results i can't wait to get the other foot done and buy myself a pair of flip flops! i dont regret it at all and am willing to go through the pain again for the sake of having it done.
maybe you should consult your doctor again and tell him about your worries to put you at ease.

hi Jana, sorry it took so long to get back to you, my surgeon was Dr Floyd at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, they do advise you that there is a risk the skin graft may not take to your skin so i don't know if a different surgen will make a difference but i guess its worth a try.

Hey.
It will now be 6 weeks tomorrow since my op, i drove for the first time yesterday with no problem, i think i could have driven much sooner but was just being lazy.
My toes look very normal now, i'm extremely pleased with the results, however, on close inspection they are still healing right in between the toes but getting better every day and not casuing me any problems. Although the first two weeks after the op were just awful i'm definately going to get the other foot done because i'm so pleased with how it looks, i have a consultation booked for May.
Melin i'm from London by the way. Your toes look really good in the pic!

Oh i see, yes on both unfortunately, the right was a little worse which is the one i had done first.
It went well thank you, i felt a bit sick when he was cleaning between my toes, i think its going to take a lot of getting used to, the skin graft (whcih is on the bottom of my foot) was a little sore afterwards. It will be three weeks on tuesday, am much better now, still on crutches, back to hospital the hospital on monday. Do you have any pics of how your toes look now?

Thank you! I didn't stay in hospital overnight, i went into theatre at 12pm and left the hospital by 4pm. I have simple incomplete syndactyly, so no bones thankfully. how about you?
Its been a week today and i'm still feeling horrible, the pain isn't so bad but because its bandaged up to my ankle i find i'm getting alot of cramp in mt foot and very uncomfortable, was also up early this morning being sick!
I have an appointment to get my bandages off next tuesday. i'm wondering if i want to get the other foot done...will you??

Hi there! sorry i havent been able to go on for awhile an let you know how im getting along with the recovery period ECT!!
hope meilin and paranoid are doing as well as i have :!):):) HI GUYS !!

i had my surgery 21 OCT so have been roughly 3 mths mt toes are fully healed now an graft is coming along... It also is the more annoying thing haha!
there is scar tissue in between my toes and one very small one on the front of one of the toes. i dont know why this is i guess something to do with the zig zag formation of the skin?!?!
i use BIO OIL regularly thought which i find is amazing stuff!!! definalty advise it to help heal those scars!!!
carla i hope your recovery is going well! i just wondering if you stayed overnight in hospital afet your surgery?? i didnt and that is why i think i was in such pain.. it was b/c the morphine was wearing off and had a 3 hr car ride home on the same day of surgery :(:(:( !
did you have complex syndactly?thats where the bone was fused??
i was walking after a month-6 weeks... i would advise you to try an walk as soon as the docs tell you too as relying on the crutches too much can cause a limp.
(my mom is a practice nurse!:) it helped a lot when i had the surgery!lol)
i also thought before having the surgey i would be fine after a month .max!! and also this forum wasnt being used that much by people who had the surgery so was quite clue less!
if you have any Q's please ask. i hope i will be able to pass on my experiences.!!:)
XOXOX

Thank you for the tips. I'm now on day 3, the first day and night i had hardly any pain i wondered what people were talking about saying it was bad, then the second night i was up literally all night in agony, since the pain hasn't been so bad so i'm not sure if i had done something wrong like resting it too high or something. I am now feeling the nausea and consequently spending all day feeling sorry for myself whcih doesn't help...i assume its due to all the tablets i'm having to take. How recently did you have your surgery? are you able to walk yet?

Hi! Carla I hope the surgery went well for you!
I would like to say that for anyone who has syndactyly and is happy and confident with themselves then you are very lucky and blessed!
I have syndactyly and am not so lucky so I recently had the surgery, I am so far very pleased with the results and would like to offer some advice to others seeing advice.
1. The surgery was not nearly as painful as some people have claimed, no more painful than stubbing your toe, just it lasts about 2-3 days.
2. Get the surgery done by a plastic surgeon who is also a hand surgeon well experienced in microsurgery not a podiatrist!!
3. Be realistic about recovery times, when the bandages first come off it looks like a gunshot wound, but with time and care you will see improvemnent with only minor scars.
4. Be as healthy as possible before and after surgery, eat, eat and then eat some more, don't smoke or drink for 1 month before or after! Never give into nausea!
5. The whole thing is without doubt a challenge, but remain calm and brave throughout and you will have no regrets! God bless!

I'm so happy i found this website and know what i've let myself in for! My surgery is next week tuesday and i've never been so nervous about anything in my life! I think i had some crazy thought that i would have the surgery and within a week be driving and walking like normal again - how wrong was I?
The thing i'm most worried about is being put to sleep...how did you all find it? was it your first time too?
