I was born with webbed feet, my second and third toes on each foot. My right is much more noticeable. I had surgery 6/5 to have this corrected by my podiatrist. The first week was excruciating. I am starting to regret my decision....I am hopeing someone whom had this done can give me feedback and possible reassurance.

I am available for any questions any one curious about the surgery has. I wish I found this site prior to my surgery.

I also have simply syndactyly between my 2nd and 3rd toes on both feet (partially webbed) and am planning to have them separated. Can anyone who has had this done before please tell me on what day they were able to walk again? I have a physically demanding job and need to resume full pressure on my feet. I am planning for complete bed rest at least 7 days with minimal pressure on my feet...I would appreciate any input from those who have had the operation. Thanks!!

Hi guys,
I wanted some advice from anyone who may have stronger ties to the surgeon who corrected their syndactyly because my surgeries were done at shriners in st.louis almost twenty years ago and I was only a baby. The main question is "does it sound possible for someone with syndactyly to get through med school and become a surgeon?" as stated I had surgery a long time ago to separate the fingers but they are half the size of normal fingers at their longest points. I recently decided to change majors and persue medical school and I want to become a surgeon but ive received a lot of negative feedback from classmates in regards to my hand. I want the opinion of others that have had similar challenges.
Thank you so much
UlrichDO.

I love my webbed toes and love showing them off. Now that it is getting colder I have to cover them up again. I hate that. This summer I would walk around in sandals hoping someone would say something. Nobody did. I was hoping someone would come up to me and say "Hey, I've got webbed toes, too!" but nobody did. Bummer! Oh well. I'll just keep wearing the sandals and hope someday to meet some "webbie". I do think they look better than so called "normal" toes.

Hi,
I'm 17 years old about to be 18 in August. I was born with syndactyly on my 2nd and 3rd toes both feet all the way up. I've always been ashamed of them I seriously thought
i was the only one with toes like this or only a few people in the world had them. I'm the only one in my family with webbed toes I've always hated family vacations Because i was always so scared that others would see my toes if we were at the lake or something. A year ago my mom took me to a doctor to ask about surgery that she promised i would get when i turned 18. He told me that He doesn't reccomend me getting it and that he would never do it because of all the risks. It broke my heart because as a little girl i always thought that as soon as i turned 18 I'd be able to wear sandals. I was devestated and cried for days. I just graduated high school and I was pretty well known Hung out with the football players Went to all the parties yet i always excluded myself out of all the beach events or pool parties. My friends always asked me to see my feet and i would just make remarks like "No, I hate feet" they never understood why i didn't wear sandals. I have a boyfriend and we have been together for a while now He kiddingly tries to take of my shoes sometimes and i get so angry with him he doesn't understand why. My mom tries to help me but i get so frustrated because she doesn't know how i feel. I know she is only trying to help and i love her for that. I want surgery but Im afraid of all the pain, Should I really do it or just learn to accept My toes?

Hi everyone!

My 16 month old had her syndactyly (conjoined middle and ring fingers on her right hand)surgery a few months ago, her post surgery scarring is really bad, our occupational therapist said that she has Hypertrophic scars, that's usually a hereditary thing.. I wonder whether there's anyone else here reading my post who has/had similar experience, whether it was a surgery for toes or fingers, how did you care for your scars? What actually helped?

We do deep tissue massage, I also use Mepiform bandaids on my daughter, Mepiform seems to help a little... would love to talk about this with someone!

Thanks for reading,

Irina

Hi:

A little history about myself. I was born with syndactyly to my hands and feet. My hands were webbed except for my thumbs. I did have an extra digit coming off of my pinky finger on both hands but they were snipped right after I was born. After multiple surgeries I had my fingers seperated so that I would be able to be a "typical" person. As for my toes I have six on each foot (five toes look funny to me) and they are all webbed as well. Yes I have trouble with ingrown toe nails and finding wide enough shoes. Other than that I have had no issues with me feet and I do not plan to have any surgery done to them.

the question I have is my great aunt had thumbs that were permentantly turned 90 degrees after the first knuckle.(put your hands on the table and imagine your thumb nail turned 90 degrees away from your fingers at the closest knuckle to your thumb nail)

Can anyone give me a direction on where to look in depth on this issue and to see if it is related to syndactyly

Thanks

Also if you have any question s from someone that has been through these surgeries please feel free to ask me any question you have.

Michelle on "getting over complex--slowly"

Hi! I am 41 years old and have had a complex because of my webbed toes most of my life. I have hidden them and missed out on many swimming activities and sleepovers because of them. I did not start hiding my toes until I moved to another city in the 5th grade but before I moved my “best friend” got mad at me and called me “glued together toes”. My estranged dad has webbed toes also. On my right foot the 2nd & 3rd are webbed up to the bottom of my toe nail and on my left foot the 2nd & 3rd are webbed to the first knuckle (not quite half way). When I moved, since I did not grow up with these kids, I was too embarrassed for them to see my feet and it got worse from there. When bell bottom jeans were in style, I could hide them pretty good if I went barefooted or wore flip flops. In general, I never wore sandals or flip flops. When I was a teenager, I tried drawing the black line but it did not help much. At one point, I even took a razor blade and softly tried to cut them apart to see if it would hurt. I was never too happy with my parents for not having them separated when I was born. I was told that they did not notice until they got home (not sure I believe that) and then my dad did not want to separate them because they were like his (except both feet 2nd & 3rd are up to bottom of toe nail). I got married when I was 17 and had dated about a year and my husband never saw my toes. So before we got married, I had to tell him about them. It was a huge deal for me to do this. He did not think they were a big deal and still loved me anyway (haha). Nine years later we had our first child, and all I wanted to know (besides if she was okay) was if her toes were webbed. I was going to get them separated. Supposedly, it’s not a big deal when they are first born. They weren’t webbed and I did the same thing with my next two children (boys). Neither was webbed. Ironically, all three of my children had to have some type of foot surgery later in life. My boys had flat feet and my daughter had hammer toes. They all had surgery. My daughter has a connective tissue disorder and hammer toes are a symptom. I always tried to teach my children to be proud of who they are and how they are made because God made them that way and my daughter did not have a problem with her hammer toes. She has been on swim team since she was seven and she is 15 now. She did have surgery because they caused her pain in her shoes eventually. She wears flip flops more than any other shoes and her toes are a bit unusual looking. For the last two summers I have been slowly wearing flip flops and I am really working on getting over my complex. If my daughter can do this, it’s the least I can do. My family insists that my toes are not very noticeable and they are very supportive in my endeavor of getting over my complex. I truly do not want to be embarrassed anymore but I have been hiding them for so long it is hard to overcome. But I am proud to say, I have made some progress. I found this website because I was looking for something to help me with this process and I am so glad I did. I have never seen toes like mine and believe me I look for them. Now I see there are many out there, all with different feelings about their toes. I have considered surgery in the past but not since my daughter developed hammer toes. She has taught me a valuable lesson. Another thing is that there are so many people out there that have deformities that are far worse and actually hinder their abilities. I thank you all for listening to this long post. I guess it is a kind of therapy to help me to get over my complex also. I actually found this site at the beginning of the summer but I am just now posting. So glad to find it.

Sorry about the downtime, folks. When I moved to a new hosting provider, I had a lot of things to get configured, and I somehow managed to forget to come back and start the forum up.

But it's up and running again now. Tell your friends!

ok, this is gonna sound really weird, I guess i sorta have webbed toes but just barely (almost up to first knuckle or whatever) and was thinking if it's just more skin thats needed why not just stretch it?

(weird part) people use this to restore the damage of circumcision and grow new foreskins so if they can grow that much skin (basically double) why couldn't it work for this situation?

anyway, I was starting to place a rubber band around my heel and going between the toes, obviously this will take time but could work (supposedly stretching as little as 20-30min a day is enough to trigger skin expansion.

I never been too concerned about my toes as it's not really noticeable but figured I'd try it

Hi,

And great to read all the messages so far and nice to hear about other people with the condition! I have webbed toes in both feet (2nd and 3rd toes); the other one is more prominent than the other, but neither are grown fully together; they separate before the last joint. My father has webbed toes (all the way up) and my great-grandmother (on my fathers side, duh) had them _probably_ too.

Someone mentioned here that (IIRC) she also had ingrown toenails - like me. I was wondering how frequent or infrequent this is with people with webbed toes. If I have understood correctly, webbing is hereditary but ingrown nails is not. I have (or rather had ;)) very large nails in my toes to begin with and this probably somewhat contributed to the probability of them growing in the side of the toe when I grew up.

BTW I would never encourage plastic surgery to remove the webbing, but I would advice anyone to go to the doctor if you have ingrown nails. I have high pain-threshold and managed to cut my toenails for a long time myself, but after a small operation to remove the excess nail, I've felt _much_ better.

Thanks again,
Respect ;).

I feel compelled to tell you some of my experiences. I am 51 and had corrective surgery at age 4 back in the 60's (2&3 toes both feet). I also have a grown daughter who has not had corrective surgery. She reads all these sites and has piqued by interest in these forums. To those of you that wished your parents would have let you have surgery as a baby, well...I just don't think they would have performed surgery for this so soon. The toes need to grow. I can tell you the surgery (back then) was quite painful in the weeks following the surgery. Quite a lot of care of the sutures and skin graft. I remember it all quite vividly and I could not do that to my very active child. Here is the part I need for you to know. My toes still never looked like everyone else's. There was scarring and the separation (maybe because I had it done at a young age) never in my opinion went down far enough to the base of the foot.

I have more to say if anyone is interested. I do not want to take up too much space rambling.

My mother was adopted. She was born in 1947 and has webbed second & third toes on both feet. She was told it was on her fathers side of the family. We know his last name is Howard. I'm hoping someone might also be webbed and be from the Howard family. I also have webbed fingers & toes, and so does my brother. If you have ANY info...please contact me. Thank You!

Hi, everyone. I am a 22 year old female and I have webbed feet. The second and third toes on both of my feet are partially webbed. However, no one else in my family has webbed feet. I didn't know that I had webbed feet until I was about 18-19. I always knew there was something different about them, but I was never able to pin point what the difference was. Duh.

I wear open-toe shoes in the summer a lot, but I've never had anyone ask me about my toes or comment on them. Other people on this forum seem to have had others ask them about their feet or suggest getting a surgery. I never had to deal with that. Maybe most people don't notice that I have webbed feet. Or maybe they do not want to be rude. There was only one time in my life when I had someone react weirdly at my feet. I was riding light rail and there was a girl (maybe 18-20 y.o.) sitting across from me. She looked at my feet and then she got a weird expression on her face as she looked at my face. She didn't say anything, though.
