For the past three hours, a spammer has been attacking this site, attempting to post comment spam. Of course, none of the over 600 attempted comment spams have ever shown up. The attacks have come from a variety of different IP numbers (at least 8 different ones at a quick glance), so it appears that the perpetrator is using remotely controlled “zombie” machines.
The comments have been a breeze to delete from my system (just search on a common keyword, go to “mass edit mode”, check all, and delete!). Since I use Kitten’s Spam Words plugin, the spams contribute more fodder against future spams. And thanks to my Spammer TarPit plugin, I get the amusement of seeing some feedback when I block the next attempt.
Everybody repeat after me…. “Spammers are stupid.”

I think I’m now going to grab your tar pit. I originally thought it was a bad idea, but now …
For added pleasure, I’ve added new code (unreleased) to TarPit that should run a portscan against the spamming host and email me the results. It hasn’t been triggered again since that addition, so I don’t know how well it works, yet.
I also modified Kittens Spam Words plugin so that it can be used on comment searches, too.
Send me a diff on those changes, enough people use both, so it’d be nice to have.

m sorry to say, it was a whole different story. What follows is my frank personal experience with a particular featureset of Wordpress and some related thoughts. Others seem to have had a much more positive outcome: Leave Me Alone, Flooded, Spam Attack, Spammers Are Stupid , Spam Already.
I installed a new plugin for WordPress today, called Kitten’s Spam Words, which I found on Dougal Campbell’s post on comment spamming . The plugin allows me to delete particular comments and mark them as spam. Future comments with similar attributes are automatically added to the moderation queue, which is nice.
