Bogus blo.gs pings?

Has anyone else noticed that blo.gs seems to be reporting erroneous site updates? Over the last day or so, it keeps reporting site updates, and yet, when I visit the sites, most of them have not updated. I know that some of these update reports are bogus, because I’ve even seen my own site show bogus updates (I was still in bed at 7:08 a.m. today, and I’m pretty sure that I didn’t update my site in my sleep).

Has the blo.gs server gone haywire, or is some prankster flooding it with bogus pings?

I think something is up. A number of sites on my blogroll that never update have been at the top of the list for the past day or so, but when I look at the blo.gs site the list looks ok. I thought it was just me but maybe there is something up.

More info, from the original creator of blo.gs: blo.gs is broken

He’s guessing that Yahoo! has added a new incoming ping source, which is the real culprit. And he further theorizes that the problem might be Yahoo!’s own RSS ping service.

Up until yesterday, blo.gs used to only allow one ping per blog per hour. That restriction appears to have been lifted.

More pings-per-hour isn’t a problem. The problem here is “phantom” pings: updates showing up on blo.gs when the site in question hasn’t actually updated.

I posted a query on the feedmesh mailing list earlier, and got a response from Shane Adams at Yahoo! He says that they’re looking into it, so hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

[...] According to Dougal, Blo.gs is showing fake pings alot of times. What I mean is that your site might show up on the “Updated recently” list at 5:55 AM and you probaly would be sleeping by then. Your site was no way updated at that time, and It shows it at blo.gs. That’s pretty weird. I’ll try to contact them and ask them what the situtation is because I think I had this problem before. tags: wordpress [...]

    blo.gs back to normal?

I noticed earlier this morning that the blo.gs updates appear to be functioning (more or less) normally again. I haven’t heard anything from my contact at Yahoo!, so I don’t know if they found a better way to filter the information from feed update…
