Doh. I should have caught up on my wp-hackers reading before I made that last post. It appears that we’re going to delay the tags support until version 2.3 in order to have more time to flesh out all the details properly. Instead, it appears that sidebar widgets may become an official core addition in WP 2.2. Stay tuned for more details…

Eeek! I feel like I’m so behind on Wordpress stuff…I need to play catch up too..
If widgets are implemented in core, I hope it will be a version with support for:-
1. PHP includes and other code
2. Logic to control which pages they show on
3. Ability to add attributes to links
The same or similar code could also be easily used to override the priority of plugins filtering on various hooks, especially the_content()
Andy: I’d also like to see the ability to select which page-views widgets appear on. I was thinking about trying to add that myself, but I don’t think I have enough spare time right now.
My question is if it will take in tags already created by Ultimate Tag Warrior and convert them to the core version? What about a tag cloud widget included?
Several people have asked about compatibility between the upcoming core tags support and the very popular Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin.
My understanding is that there will be a utility available which will convert UTW tags.
