Apparently, there are several issues with using Windows shares from OSX Mavericks, stemming from its use of SMB2. This page has some work-arounds.

BPG Image format
BGP is a lossy image format with high compression and alpha channel support that can be decoded in JavaScript. The quality comparison against JPEG is impressive.
