Toys

Ah yeah, nothing like new toys to get you motivated. I just got my new desktop PC at the office. It’s a 2.4GHz P4 with 1GB of RAM. But the best part will be the dual-monitor support. This should be a nice step up from my current machine — a 600MHz P3 with 384MB RAM.

Now I begin the laborious process of copying several GB of files and applications from the old computer to the new, and reinstalling all of my downloaded tools….

Unified RSS

For whatever reason, there has been a split in the RSS community for a while. Ian Davis proposes Unified RSS, in which RSS 1.0 becomes “RSS Metadata”, and RSS 2.0 becomes “RSS Content”.

For this to work there has to be agreement between the two sides. Some
concessions will have to be made in both camps. As a starting point
I’d suggest that the following principles would have to be agreed:

  1. Both formats have equal claim to the name RSS.
  2. Make PURL namespace available to both formats for consistency.
  3. There should be a well specified separation of responsibilities for the two formats. Overlaps should be eliminated.
  4. Development on both formats should be carried out as a community project.
  5. Current RSS specifications should be deprecated in favour of the two new formats.

I’ve never really understood the holy war between the extremists in the two camps. I’ve also never understood the requirement in RSS 1.0 for the <items><rdf:Seq/></items> element. It’s always seemed redundant to me. I always thought that this table-of-contents element should have been optional.

Fall back and regroup

It’s been another busy week. I’ve let myself get disorganized again (story of my life), but next week I plan to buckle down and get a ton of stuff done, both at work, and on my personal web sites. I’ve been threatening for a long time to revive my ailing War Against Spam site, and I’m going to try to bring that to fruition over the next few weeks. I hope to once again make it a useful resource, and get some traffic coming in to it.

W3C Approves Patent Policy

The World Wide Web Consortium has approved a new Patent Policy. The nitty-gritty of it is in this statement:

“In order to promote the widest adoption of Web standards, W3C seeks to issue Recommendations that can be implemented on a Royalty-Free (RF) basis. Subject to the conditions of this policy, W3C will not approve a Recommendation if it is aware that Essential Claims exist which are not available on Royalty-Free terms.”

That sounds like good news for the future of web standards.

Localization

For quite some time, I’ve wanted to blog about local issues (local to me, here in southeast Alabama). I even have an idea kicking around in the back of my brain that would make a whole separate blog. I just don’t have the time to get it started right now, or to research and post the local news links here. But, I did run across a site yesterday that discusses some Alabama-related issues, and I’ve added it to my blogroll.

Check out The World Around You. And if anyone in Alabama knows of other good blogs that discuss topics relevant to the area, please let me know. If I can collect enough of them, I might make it a whole sub-menu section. I’m mainly interested in blogs, or discussion sites, and in particular I’d like links for the Wiregrass area.
