There will be a lunar eclipse tomorrow night, visible throughout most of the United States. Of course, my area is expecting scattered thunderstorms, so we might not be able to see it. But there are three more eclipses due by the end of next year, so we should be able to catch at least one of them.
BlogMatcher
BlogMatcher is a nifty “what other blogs are similar to mine?” tool. It finds other blogs that link to similar sites, using a scoring technique to try to match up sites with similar interests.
Theme Issues
I am aware that there are some glitches in some of the themes, particularly when viewed in Internet Explorer. I’ll try to fix them as soon as time allows (I really need to go through all my of my CSS and clean some things up). The problems are mostly in the Campbell and Tech themes. Also, I might change to a server-side style switching method, which should eliminate the delay between displaying the “clear sky” theme and switching to your chosen style when you load the pages.
If you notice style problems, please feel free to post them in the comments to this article.
XHTML 2.0
The W3C has released a new working draft for XHTML 2.0.
As has been noted before, XHTML2 is very different from XHTML1, and XHTML1 is not without issues, if you want to get anal about it.
Of course, since there aren’t any browsers that actually implement XHTML2, there’s still not much point in worrying about it. Yet.
The Daily Haggis
How could I not like a website called The Daily Haggis?
Linked.
What was the question?
Readers of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books know that the answer to the great question of Life the Universe and Everything is 42. But the Question has remained a mystery. Until now.
The question is, “What rank does the surname ‘Campbell’ hold in the USA?”
Reality TV
Reality TV shows like Survivor, The Bachelor, Big Brother, and the like seem to be all-the-rage right now. So much so, that next year will see the creation of Reality Central, a cable channel dedicated to those types of shows. Personally, I expect it to fail pretty spectacularly, as I believe that this is just a fad, and people are going to start getting sick of these shows and fall back to the tried-and-true sitcoms and fictional dramas.
However, it does bring to mind a prediction that I made years ago, back when shows like Cops and America’s Most Wanted were the television soup du jour. My prediction was that we would eventually have a “Crime TV” network. With Crime TV, businesses would syndicate video feeds from their security cameras. Home viewers would watch for suspicious behavior, and win prizes for helping the stores nab shoplifters. Sponsorship of these feeds would make it feasible for malls and department stores to downsize some of their security personel, and possibly even turn security into a profit center.
Okay, so it’s not all that likely to happen in…um…reality. Crime TV would be a legal nightmare. Broadcasting surveillance video for profit without the permission of those being monitored and people trying to scam the system by making false accusations are just the first two things that come to mind. But doesn’t it sound just feasible enough? Doesn’t it sound like it’s just this side of the science fiction in The Running Man?
New Default Theme
I’ve replaced the old default theme. Use the Clear Styles link in the menu to check it out.
Mini Icons
I’ve always thought that using a tiny icon to indicate that a link led to an external site was a good idea. I should do that on my site one day.
Future Hack
One of the great things about the Internet is that sometimes you find the answers to problems before you even start searching. Actually, the links that Simon gives there will only solve part of a problem that I’ll be working on soon, but any starting point is better than none.
