Stone Mountain Highland Games

Bagpipers on Parade

Bagpipers on Parade

Susan and I went to the Stone Mountain Highland Games last Saturday. We had been told that it was “huge”, but we thought that it wasn’t that much bigger than the Alabama Highland Games, which we’ve attended the past few years. There were a few more clan and vendor tents, and there were more people attending, but I’d say that the Alabama Highland Games stands up well in comparison.

Drum Major 1

We were a little disappointed at what seemed to be a small turnout at the Clan Campbell Society booth — there were only a few names already on the visitor’s roster when I added our names. I would like to have stopped back by later in the afternoon to see if it had picked up, but we just never made it back over there.

Crusaders

We stopped by most, if not all, of the vendors to peruse their goods. And we bought a fair amount of items. Susan picked up a really nice wool blanket done in the Campbell (Blackwatch) tartan. She also picked up a book called Celtic Knits, which has over 25 knitting patterns for sweaters, scarves, and such. I picked up a book on Celtic Knotwork Designs. I’ve seen some good websites on this subject before, but sometimes you just want hardcopy. Susan also picked up two new pairs of Celtic cross earrings, one in silver, the other in pewter.

Of course, we also had to ignore our eating plan for the day and sample the food. For lunch, Susan had a “Bridie” (a small, spiced meat pastry), and I had a meat pie. We also had some beer (Grolsch was a sponsor). And we picked up an assortment of sweets: oatmeal raisin cookies, shortbread, and other confections, which we brought home to share with the rest of the family.

Caber Toss

Caber Toss

After our lunch, we went to the athletic field to watch the caber toss. After several competitors were easily able to turn the first two cabers (I think the announcer said they were just over 100 pounds), they recommended that they switch to the backup caber, which weighed in at about 140 pounds. That made a big difference, as only two or three of the athletes were able to turn that one. However, one fellow did an amazing brute-force turn from a stand-still! Normally, they have to get a running start, to add to the caber’s momentum.

Henri’s Notions

Henri’s Notions

There were several musical groups performing, but the only one we stopped to listen to was Henri’s Notions, who are from Alabama. They sounded really great, and we stopped by their table afterwards to buy a CD. We chatted with lead singer Jil Chambless for a bit, and were surprised to learn that she has family in our old hometown of Enterprise. Ain’t it a small world? Anyhow, all of the musicians were quite talented, and I’m sure we’ll be buying more of their music soon.

We had a nice time there, and the cool weather was definitely a plus. We wore jackets the whole time, though we probably could have gone without them during the warmest parts of the day. We’re looking forward to going back again next year.

Weight Goal

I weighed in today at 256 pounds, which is 4.5 pounds lighter than last Monday, but 2 pounds higher than my low point of 254. It’s really amazing how much one weekend of carefree enjoyment of food can affect your body, and how long it takes to recover from it. But, I’m still down more than 15 pounds from when I started, and I can feel the difference in my clothes. I’m back to wearing some of my older jeans, and even those feel loose in the waist. I also need to either punch a new notch in my belt or buy a new one.

Granted, I haven’t been strictly following our eating plan over all of last week, either. We went to the Stone Mountain Highland Games on Saturday, and sampled a few tasty treats there. And hey, wow — another sucky web site. If anybody who has pull with the organizers of the SMHG sees this, let them know that their web site really needs some improvement. Yikes. 😯

On the other hand, the National Peanut Festival website, which I complained about last year, has vastly improved. Well, at least it looks a lot better, visually. The pages don’t validate, and they’re using table-based layout. But at least it looks professional, now.

Spammers are still stupid

I’m getting hammered by a comment spammer again. It started yesterday afternoon, and according to my logs, it’s still going on this morning. The spams are coming from several different IP numbers (which all now blocked by my Spammer TarPit plugin), and the hosts appear to be different types. All of them appear to be running open HTTP proxies, and some appear to be infected with BackOrifice and/or NetBus.

Of course, none of the spams are getting in.

Wireless

Here at home, we have a wireless network, necessitated by the fact that the house we’re renting is not wired for networking. The problem we have is that we’ve got computers upstairs and downstairs that all need to be on the network. At the moment, the wireless router is upstairs in the master bedroom, which is about as far away from our downstairs “office” computers as it can be. As a result, the connectivity can be less than ideal. In fact, Susan’s computer falls off the network with frustrating frequency.

I’ve been trying to figure out what our options are to improve this situation. There are several options:

  • Relocate the router
  • Put a bigger antenna on the router
  • Add another access point/router/repeater

The first option would be the cheapest, but I’m doubtful about whether it would be worth the effort. The location of the router is dictated by the location of the cable outlets in the house (since our internet service is via cable-modem). I’ll probably try it though. I should see if there are any kind of tools that could give me measurable metrics on the before-and-after signal strength.

The second option would be fairly inexpensive, but again, I’m doubtful about how much it would help.

The last option is one I’ve started to do a little bit of research on. I was all set to buy a D-Link DLW-G800AP until I saw the little footnote that says that it will only repeat the signal of a DI-624 router. We have a DI-524.

What are my other options? I’m not sure how wireless access points correspond to wired hubs. If this was a wired network, I’d just add a hub downstairs and connect it to the hub upstairs. If I add an AP to our network (but not in repeater mode), can I make it do the same thing?

Update: Just before I posted this, I remembered that I had NetStumbler installed, so I fired it up. I knew that there were a couple of other APs in the neighborhood that we can see, but what I finally noticed was that they were using the same channel as us. I’ve changed the channel that our router uses. We’ll see if that improves anything. I’m still interested in boosting our signal strength, though.

Web Collaboration: The IT Kitchen

Shelley Powers is organizing a fun experiment in collaboration, called the IT Kitchen (in addition to the wiki, there is also an IT Kitchen Blog).

The basic idea is that volunteers will sign up to write about certain topics on certain days, all based around the idea of creating a resource for learning more about blogging. At the end of two weeks, the result should be a detailed set of essays and resources.

I’m hoping that I’ll be able to find time to participate at least a little bit. If nothing else, I could write about how Matt and I manipulated the power laws of the blogosphere to jump-start the launch of Ping-O-Matic. Before our launch, my blog pinger was getting about 1500 hits a day. Now, Ping-O-Matic sends out nearly 200,000 pings per day.

Weekend fun

Things I consumed this weekend that aren’t on my diet plan:

  • Beer
  • Hot dogs
  • Hamburgers*
  • Potato salad
  • Baked beans
  • Sauerkraut
  • Diet soda (ha!)
  • Sausage bread
  • Pumpkin bread
  • Chips
  • Dip
  • Chocolate cake
  • Ice cream

Weight I gained as a result:

  • 6 pounds

Number of kids under age 10 sleeping in our living room on Saturday night:

  • 6

The reason for all of the above:

Mary’s 9th Birthday

Happy 9th birthday, Mary!

* Technically, a hamburger patty with no bun would be okay, along with some vegetables and maybe a baked potato or some rice.

Patterns in Web Design

37signals has yet another excellent article out. This one is called An Introduction to Using Patterns in Web Design. Some of it might seem obvious, or even instinctive, if you’ve been doing programming and/or web design for a while. But it’s a really good breakdown of a design process. (found via sidesh0w)

One of these days, I’ll get around to redesigning this site again. I’ve felt for a while now that my sidebar is too cluttered. I want to move some of that information into sub-pages, and open up some whitespace on the page.

WordPress Security

Last week, some reports came out about security bugs in WordPress. The development team has been working to clean these up, and a WordPress 1.2.1 release was announced today. Obviously, these fixes have also gone into the 1.3-alpha version which is currently under development.

We appreciate the WordPress community’s patience while we fixed the problems. If you are running WP 1.2 or older, and can’t upgrade immediately for some reason, you can protect yourself very easily. Simply click the “Logout” button in the admin screens whenever you don’t need to be in the admin interface.

If you’re ready to upgrade, download WordPress 1.2.1 from the usual location.

Weight Goal

I got busy and forgot to post last Monday. But that’s okay because I didn’t have much progress to report. We were having a hectic period, and wound up eating out a lot. Then Susan put together the smoker she got last Christmas, and we’ve smoked some chicken breasts and a turkey since then (and when I say “we” did it, I really mean that Susan did it). Mmm… Home smoked poultry rocks!

Anyhow, my current weight is 257 pounds, with the trend weight just a half pound above that. So over the past four weeks I’ve lost pretty close to 15 pounds. We finally got our treadmill moved into the garage yesterday, so that will let us get in some measured exercise, rain or shine. Hurray for technology 🙂

Job Interview 2: Return of the Interview

Remember that telephone interview I had, and how I was hoping to get a call back for a second interview? I had just about given up hope of hearing back from them. But I had voicemail earlier today letting me know that they would like to meet with me for a second interview. Woot!

It’s scheduled for the middle of next week. They’ve asked me to provide all sorts of examples of my work (flowcharts, object diagrams, server-side and client-side programming examples, etc.), so I’m going to be pretty busy getting my materials together over the next few days. Keep your fingers crossed!
